ABOUT FREnCH BULLDOGS

French Bulldogs love to be active and play. They are known as the clown dog, because of their quirky personalities. Because this breed is brachiocephalic though, they need to play indoors on warm/hot days or they can die from heat stroke pretty fast.

Every year as the weather warms up, I see people posting about their frenchies that they left in the yard, playing with their toys or family and the poor thing died of heat stroke. It may not seem hot for you, but when it is warm/hot outside, play inside in the air conditioned home or put Netflix on and chill

Things to consider about the French bulldog before adding one to your family

French bulldogs can suffer from BOAS issues(Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome). BOAS issues can develop as the pup grows over a couple years. These issues can be minor, such as a little bit of snoring to sever, which would be having difficulty breathing.

BOAS issue can be Stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, everted saccules, small trachea and thick tongues. All these issues will hinder breathing Buying from a reputable breeder who “purposely” breeds to produce dogs that don’t have BOAS issues or exercise intolerances is no guarantee, but your odds of getting a pup that is most likely to grow without issues is significantly better

French Bulldogs CANNOT swim! I know, you have seen videos or seen a French bulldog swim, but trust me when I say, they will eventually sink. They “Need” a life vest on when they are near water or on a boat.

I have had more than one client over the years tell me of a Frenchie they knew that a friend or family member owned that loved to swim and apparently did quite well, but I would always get a call in the future from them telling me how the poor thing eventually drowned!

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PUT LIFE VESTS ON YOUR FRENCHIE WHEN IN OR NEAR WATER OR BOATING

French Bulldogs do not have the ability to reach their genitals, so they need their human mom or dad to give their vulvas, sheaths and butts a little wipe at the end of the day. They may be able to reach when they are very young, but that will change as they develop. To ensure they do not develop UTI’s make sure to give a quick wipe with a wet paper towel or baby wipe at the end of the day.

French bulldogs need their face rolls wiped in the creases and dried, to prevent moisture, so a yeast infection, doesn’t develop between the rolls.

WHAT BREEDS ARE FRENCH BULLDOGS?

French Bulldogs are part of the dwarf breeds (toy breeds)

The English bulldog was crossed with terriers and pugs to achieve the compact French Bulldog size we see today

IS THE FRENCH BULLDOG A GOOD FAMILY DOG?

The french bulldog is an excellent family dog.  They love to be close to their family and are a strong hardy dog, that loves to clown around.

They don’t like to be left home alone for very long, so if you have a job that keeps you away from home for 8 hours or more a day, you may want to reconsider adding a frenchie to your home.
